Nicholas’s latest recording, a collection of works by Simon Holt, is released on 24 March on NMC Recordings.
Recorded with the Hallé Orchestra, the album features percussion concerto a table of noises with soloist Colin Currie, violin concert witness to a snow miracle with soloist Chloë Hanslip, and orchestral work St Vitus in the kettle.
The album showcases Holt’s highly narrative orchestral compositions. witness to a snow miracle depicts the story of the life, and particularly gruesome death, of St Eulalia of Merida, while a table of noises is inspired by Holt’s memories of a great uncle who was a one-legged taxidermist and limits the instrumentalist to the instruments they can fit on a table.
