Finnish Radio Symphony announces first season with Nicholas Collon as Chief Conductor

On 4 August the Finnish Radio Symphony announced their 2021/22 season, the first under Nicholas Collon as Chief Conductor.

In his inaugural season Stravinsky is highlighted fifty years after his death, with the orchestra performing a wide range of repertoire from Petrushka to his lesser-known mini-opera Renard. The FRSO will also devote a festival to Thomas Adès featuring a world premiere, and with Ades himself conducting a programme and playing chamber music with musicians from the orchestra. A focus on Finnish composer Lotta Wennäkoski will include the premiere of her Harp Concerto; and Esa Pekka Salonen will conduct the premiere of his own Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra.

A host of celebrated violinists will join the orchestra, notably Lisa Batiashvili, Renaud Capuçon, Leila Josefowicz, Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Pekka Kuusisto. As part of the orchestra’s continuing partnership with the Ondine label, Collon will also record discs of Sibelius, Adès and Wennäkoski. All Finnish Radio Symphony performances will be broadcast live on television, radio and available for catchup on Yle Areena, making it one of the most frequently televised broadcast orchestras in the world.
